History of Chocoholic Tours
Chocoholic Tours is a premium small group walking experience.
All the walking tours have been been carefully designed to showcase Melbourne’s lanes, arcades and all of the city’s cultural hot spots.
We show you where the locals love to linger, educate you about the bean to bar chocolate making process, you will visit unique boutique style chocolatiers, chat to the owners and chocolatiers to hear their story behind the businesses and we will ensure you have a trail of wistful recollections to lead you back to your favourite places.
The tours are all inclusive small groups of maximum 12 people which allows the opportunity to connect and share the local experience.
The history of Chocoholic Tours starts way back in the life of Suzie Wharton.
Suzie’s father was a closet chocoholic who introduced Suzie to the delights and health benefits of chocolate. He was known to never share his spoils but would occasionally let Suzie sample the wonders of a dark chocolate almond.
As an inquisitive child, she wondered what secrets chocolate really held?
Suzie studied nursing and then went on to study events and marketing. It was during work experience at the Melbourne Convention and Marketing Bureau, at a brainstorming session that her passion for the sweet side of life surfaced.
In order to help Melbourne promote itself as the food capital of Australia, she suggested doing a chocolate and desserts walking tour. The Just Desserts Tour was born. Suzie soon realised that chocolate was her passion and it was shared by the bulk of her followers.
In order to continue to expand her chocolate knowledge she travelled to chocolate companies such as Haigh’s (Adelaide), Cadbury’s (UK), Terry’s (UK), Neuhaus (Belgium), Milka (Austria), Lindt (Switzerland) and Felchlin (Switzerland). She has also been to cacao plantations in Mossman (FNQ), Brazil and Hawaii.
In 2001, she launched her book ‘Spoil yourself – a Chocoholic Guide to Melbourne’.
In 2012, Suzie received a Bronze Lord Mayor’s Commendation Award for her 10 continuous years of promoting Melbourne.
In 2014, Suzie had several health issues meaning that her participation in the business has had to be cut back.
In 2015, Suzie decided that her legacy will continue with her niece, Jessica Gilchrist (also known as her chocolate daughter) to keep the passion of chocolate alive.
Jessica has also grown up around chocolate with Suzie showing her its secrets, she comes from an Event Management background and is a fun, charismatic and motivated person that has spent her entire life surrounded by an entrepreneurial family.
11 months into the Chocoholic journey Jessica was diagnosed with cervical cancer. With big goals, systemisation plans and overcoming some fairly radical life challenges, Jessica has returned in July 2016 and is ready to take on the Melbourne Tourism market.
Returning to tours has bought me so much happiness, all I want is for every person who joins me to feel that same joy while we discover Melbourne together. I look forward to seeing you all on tour!
